Itinerary
There is a new and much better version of this tour!
Day 1 - Las Vegas to Zion National Park - 159 mi / 255.83 km - 2 3/4 hours
Map | This tour runs every day during the summer months. It runs less frequently in the shoulder season. The days and dates it operates can be seen in the calendar at the top right of this page.
Pick ups take place from the Las Vegas Strip at about 6.15 a.m. If there are enough people in the downtown area, we will also pick up at one central downtown location. Should you have to take a taxi or bus to meet us, we will reimburse you a maximum of $10 against the receipt.
Like all of our tours this is a small group trip. The average number of people last year was only eight. Please remember that our guides are very knowledgeable about the areas you travel through, as well as the geology, traditions and customs of the local people. Feel free to ask any and all questions!
The route is picturesque in parts, as it travels up Interstate 15, through Nevada, crossing into Arizona, and then passing through the Virgin River Gorge. We may pause briefly in the Gorge to take pictures, before making a comfort stop at either the small southern Utah town of St. George, or the even smaller one of Hurricane. |
Day 1 - Zion National Park - About 1 3/4 hours
| | Zion is Utah's most popular National Park, and its story is one of rock and water, and there are plenty of both to be seen. We'll take a leisurely drive through the park, stopping frequently to take photographs and enjoy the scenery. The road goes past the Great Arch of Zion, which is a natural photo stop.
Our route will take us up a series of switchbacks and through an incredible tunnel that has been blasted into the rocks. We'll leave the park at the less traveled east exit, which most visitors don't even get to see. |
Day 1 - Zion to Page (on the shores of Lake Powell) - 2 3/4
Map | From Zion we will travel to Page, on the shores of Lake Powell, passing through the small town of Kanab, on the Utah/Arizona border, on the way. It is a scenic drive to Page, as you pass alongside the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.
Time permitting, a short distance from Page we will take a dirt road to a spectacular overlook of Lake Powell.
There is a short comfort break at Page. |
Day 1 - Page to Monument Valley - 132 mi / 212.39 km - About 2 1/2 hours
Map | We will now travel to Monument Valley. On the way you will start to see the mesas and buttes for which the area is so well known. |
Day 1 - Monument Valley - 1 3/4 to 2 hours
| | Up next is a 1 3/4 to two hour tour of Monument Valley, conducted by a Navajo guide. Visitors love to see the buttes, mesas and other sandstone formations that are so prevalent in the Monument Valley area. Monument Valley is actually not really a valley at all, but a relatively flat plain surrounded by red cliffs, with the buttes, as well as the remnants of ancient volcanoes, towering from the earth.
For fans of old western movies, Monument Valley is the epicenter of the west, with many great cowboys and Indians films having been shot in the area. The familiar rock shapes can be seen from many miles away, with the really great scenery to be seen on the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, which straddles the Utah/Arizona border.
Amongst the sites that your tour will take in are Anasazi ruins, petroglyphs, movie locations, 1000 foot monoliths, rug weaving and Indian hogans. The famous monuments are visited as well as many rock windows and arches of unique shapes.
Time permitting you can buy Navajo souvenirs and jewelry. |
Day 1 - Monument Valley to Page - 132 mi / 212.39 km - About 2 1/2 hours
| | From Monument Valley we will return to Page. |
Day 1 - Page
| | You are on your own for dinner, and will spend the night at the Page Quality Inn (www.qualityinnpage.com). A free hot breakfast buffet is included in the tour price. |
Day 2 - Page area: Antelope Canyon - About 1 1/2 hours
| | First up this morning is an off road tour to Antelope Canyon, one of the most striking slot canyons known to man. A slot canyon is a narrow canyon sliced through a mesa by the forces of nature. Some canyons measure less than a yard across at the top, but drop a hundred feet or more from the rim to the bottom. Slots are cut and scoured by water and wind, with the striations of the sandstone becoming almost incandescent.
From within you will see a palette of colors transmuted by light filtering down from above and bouncing from wall to wall. Antelope Canyon can only be visited using the services of an authorized Navajo Nation guide, and we use Carolene Ekis' Antelope Canyon Tours. |
Day 2 - Page to the Grand Canyon - 139 mi / 223.65 km - About 3 hours
Map | The road from Page to the Grand Canyon goes across the Navajo Nation reservation, before entering the Grand Canyon at the lesser used east entrance. We will stop almost as soon as we enter the park, to take in the Desert View Watchtower, and admire the Hopi Indian artwork inside. This is where you will also get your first views of the Grand Canyon! |
Day 2 - South Rim of the Grand Canyon - About 2 1/2 hours
| | The Grand Canyon needs no explanation, and we will take you to some of the best vantage points to enjoy the never ending vistas. These include Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Bright Angel Lodge where you will have the opportunity to buy yourself a meal. |
Day 2 - Grand Canyon to Las Vegas - 276 mi / 444.08 km - 5 hours
Map | It's time to return to Las Vegas and end the tour. If we're in a smaller vehicle, it may be possible to go over Hoover Dam on the way back, but mini buses are not permitted over the Dam Wall.
Thanks for joining us! |
Reverse route on Tuesdays
| | On Tuesdays this tour runs in reverse. The only difference is that instead of spending the night in Page, you stay in Tsegi, on the Navajo Reservation, at the Anasazi Inn (http://www.anasaziinn.com/tsegicanyon/index.html). This is a clean, but very basic motel. The reason we stay there is that every other motel in the region is significantly more expensive. You go to all the same parks, and spend the same time in each park on both tours.
The route is as follows:
Day one - Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, and tour the Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon to Tsegi, and spend the night.
Day two - Tsegi to Monument Valley, and tour Monument Valley. Monument Valley to Page/Lake Powell and tour Antelope Canyon. Page/Lake Powell to Zion National Park, and tour through that, before returning to Las Vegas. |
