    Itinerary

Like all our tours , this is a small group trip. The vehicle used generally has between nine and 13 seats. Our guides are skilled in the geology, customs, traditions, history and people of the areas through which you travel – feel free to ask all and any questions!
    Day 1  -  Overview of the tour  -  450 mi / 724.05 km  -  About 11 hours

Rather than taking the bus, which travels on an Interstate well away from the ocean and the sights, this tour offers a route mostly along the picturesque Pacific Coast Highway, also known as Highway 1.

You get to check out the endless beaches and waves of southern California, and see the surf lifestyle for which the region is so well known. The tour twists and turns its way over the steep cliffs towering over the Pacific Ocean far below, before cutting inland to Monterey and on to San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf.

Please check out the exact route on our various maps on this page.

Day 1  -  Pick up locations

We pick up in downtown Santa Monica. Please take a look at the map to see the exact area. The vehicle will pick up in Santa Monica at the hotels (no private addresses) of the first four groups who book. We will also pick you up at any hotel that we have booked for you.

If you are not staying at one of those, or you are not one of the first four groups to book, you will need to get to one of those locations. We will let you know where they are after booking.
    Day 1  -  From Santa Monica, west along the ocean ...  -  38 mi / 61.14 km  -  About 1 1/4 hours

Once we have all our guests we drop down from Santa Monica to the Pacific Coast Highway below, which, as the name suggests, follows the Pacific Ocean for hundreds of miles. The vehicle will make its way north, along the golden beaches and blue seas.

You should start to see some of the surf and beach related activities for which the region is so famous.

Soon you will be in Malibu, which is known for its celebrity inhabitants and large ocean side mansions. The road stays close to the sea as you continue to enjoy never ending vistas of southern California's surf lifestyle.

We will pass several quaint piers, and, if the surf is up, you may even see some of the locals out on their boards!

After stopping at Point Mugu to take pictures of the giant rock and ocean break, the road detours inland for a short while.

Day 1  -  The coast line to Santa Barbara  -  50 mi / 80.45 km  -  About one hour

The ocean is only left behind for a short time, we promise, as the vehicle makes its way past the Point Mugu Naval Air Station. Fruits and vegetables are in abundance in the surrounding fields - please feel free to ask your guide to stop at one of the road side stands if you want to buy something.

It won't be long before we meet up with the ocean once more, and enjoy spectacular views of the beaches and oceans again as we make our way towards Santa Barbara.

The road returns inland for a short distance, as you pass through Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo, before meeting up with the ocean again at Morro Bay.

Morro Bay is a quaint little town, surrounded by picturesque seaside scenery. It is also a short drive away from the legendary Hearst Castle, which was owned by one of the USA's wealthiest families. You may get a glimpse of it far away on a hill.
    Los Angeles Los Angeles
For many the stretch from Hearst Castle to Monterey is the most spectacular part of the trip. The road twists and turns along cliffs above the ocean. Please note that people who get motion sick may find that this makes the tour unsuitable for them.

The never ending ocean views are really wonderful, and there will once again be frequent photographic opportunities.

Amongst the stops on the way is the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. The short trail provides an opportunity to stretch your legs as you stroll down towards a beautiful cove, highlighted by a unique waterfall that actually drops down onto the beach.

There's nothing we can say about San Francisco that has not already been said, so we won't! Suffice to say that we leave the coast behind as we start to make our way from Monterey into the outlying San Francisco suburbs, before arriving at Fisherman's Wharf.

You are on your own for dinner and will spend the night In San Francisco.
    Day 2  -  Golden Gate Bridge  -  5 mi / 8.05 km  -  About half an hour
If time and traffic permit, and if there are enough people who want to do so, we will make a detour to an overview of the Golden Gate Bridge, which is a huge suspension bridge spanning the opening of San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean.

Leaving San Francisco we then travel over the Bay Bridge, across Yerba Buena Island, passing through the hustle and bustle of the city, before reaching more open country.

The traffic and the built up suburbs will be left behind as you travel through the fields and climb up steep hills to Yosemite.

You will enter Yosemite from the west entrance, and travel through the park to Yosemite Village, which is down in the valley. The scenery is spectacular. Amongst the sights you will see is Yosemite Falls, the highest waterfall in North America.

For many the highlight of the trip is El Capitan, the towering rock mountain. If you look carefully you can often see climbers attached to the sheer granite walls.

You will be able to get yourself a bite to eat and perhaps buy some souvenirs.

After visiting Yosemite Valley we will start climbing up into the mountains. There are frequent stops to admire the views and take photographs. The Tuolumne Meadows are a particularly beautiful alpine valley, surrounded by tall trees and lush vegetation.

We climb all the way to Yosemite's east entrance, which is located on the Tioga Pass, at almost 10 000 feet (over 3000 metres). Just as is the case with the Grand Canyon and Zion, the east entrance is only seen by a handful of the huge numbers of people who visit Yosemite.

The road drops in a hurry from the Tioga Pass down to the east side of the Sierras. As you might expect the views are spectacular, and we can stop wherever you like to take photographs.

The night is spent in the small town of Bishop.
Yosemite Tioga Pass Yosemite transportation Transportation to Yosemite
Please be aware that the Tioga Pass, which is the east exit from Yosemite, is closed because of snow at the start and possibly the end of the tour season. When this happens, the tour will depart Yosemite at the south entrance instead. As the route is a little longer less time will be spent in Death Valley.

Please also be aware that it is possible, but unlikely, that there will be snow restrictions on the road from Yosemite Valley to the south entrance of the park. If that is the case, however, we will bypass Yosemite and once again spend additional time in Death Valley. The night will be spent somewhere on the east side of the Sierra Mountains.
    Day 3  -  Bishop to Death Valley  -  190 mi / 305.71 km  -  About 4 hours, 30 minutes
    Map
    Map
The road to Death Valley goes through the small town of Lone Pine, where you can get a great view of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous 48 states. It is amazing to think that in just a few hours you will be at the lowest point in the entire country!
Death Valley is the lowest, hottest and driest part of North America. We will enter the park at the west entrance and drop down a steep hill, towards Stovepipe Wells, and an impressive cluster of sand dunes along the way. Just past that is Devils Cornfields.

At Furnace Creek we will stop for a while, at the Visitor Center and gift shop, to allow you to do some shopping and perhaps buy a snack.

From Furnace Creek there is a short detour to Zabriskie Point. After climbing to the top of the view point to take in the spectacular rock formations and colors, we will retrace our steps a little and pick up the Badwater Road. Badwater is about 280 feet below sea level, and we will stop there for a while to check out the views, stroll around, and shoot some pictures.

Just past Badwater are some old abandoned mine buildings, another great photo opportunity.

We will leave Death Valley at the small town of Shoshone.

The road to Las Vegas travels up and down a small mountain, before passing through the desert to the town of Pahrump, where brothels are legal.

From there it is a relatively short trip to Sin City.
